Swine Season

Yep

Simply another example of media-induced hysteria.

Hey, they gotta find SOMETHING to set their hair on fire about!

"Good News Breaks Out All Over"

"Another Boring No-News Day"

Those headlines won't sell subscriptions or advertising space.

Being a cynic isn't a bad thing,

in fact it can be a good thing.

Merriam-Webster Online gives two definitions:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cynic

cynic
cyn·ic
Pronunciation:
\'si-nik\
Function:
noun
1 capitalized : an adherent of an ancient Greek school of philosophers who held the view that virtue is the only good and that its essence lies in self-control and independence
2: a faultfinding captious critic ; especially : one who believes that human conduct is motivated wholly by self-interest

Your belief that Obama's actions are self-serving (definition 2) is well founded by simple observation of his history, at least that which hasn't been scrubbed.
It seems that there are many Cynics (definition 1) who distrust Obama because they believe in self-sufficiency.

Stop by and see how cynical I am.

Brian

Sorry for the lousy editing job...But as you can see if you check headlines in News we see the words "waning", "over"!! Yeah, sure new cases in the states and Europe-so what? All hyped up and no epidemic.

Salt

Thanks for stopping. I guess I am happy to point out the self-serving nature. I mean, we all know it.
If this were truly epidemic, then the rate of infection at this point would be more than we could handle.
Back in '76, the CDC went a little hog wild (no pun intended)and swore that the impending epidemic would originate in NJ, where several deaths occurred. In the end, no such thing happened.
I don't like the gun Jumping.

The whole Schmoe

Seems overblown, but I'm still not going to kiss a pig.
(the lipstick is hard to get off my shirts)

Nee

I well remember the push toward panic in '76 - it nearly cost me some stripes when I refused to get the swine flu shot mandated for the military. I knew the devastation caused by the "side effect", Guillain-Barre. My mother was stricken by it when I was but 2-years-old, and I only had some very old home movies as reference of her being able to walk without canes. Of all the coming deaths they touted - only one for the flu, and I believe over a dozen caused by the vaccine.

Thanks for your comments at my place.

Salt

The kicker about that vaccine and GBS is that they are still not sure of the links. I did read that perhaps molecular apps could be applied to learn about this, but that there were other factors for the 15 or so cases of GBS purportedly related to that vaccine.

There has been some research done in four states for the 90's, and now, there is a warning for the menactra (meningitis)vaccine and risks for GBS. I don't know if there are parameters that have been set to warn those at risk. There are warnings but I am not sure how specific it is.
Did your Mom recover?

Nee

Why isn't it called the "butt flu"? H1N1 looks like it should be pronounced Hiney.

The Zero needs these medical scares to move his national healthcare debacle. Fear mongering is a stock political tool and with a complicit press these stories go viral. (Ouch!, a terrible pun, I am filled with self loathing over it!)

Stick me in Saltwater's category 2!

Nee

Right on. A diversionary tactic. Create hysteria on another form of the flu while continuing Obama's agenda in the White house. The media also decided not say who good Mexico's medical facilities are, compared to ours.

Of course the other epidemic the media is failing to talk about is the stupid bug, running free in the white house. The stupid bug is the largest threat to our great country and should be cured.

Sarge...

Too funny!! Somehow I missed the healthcare thing, I was just thinking messianic savior, period. Good one.

Eric

Stuck on stupid, yep, that is the truth!

Slight of Hand...

I think you've made some very valid points Nee. It seems that everyone involved has been blowing this out of proportion and it makes me wonder why?? Could it be repayment? Possibly. I feel that it's more than likely the slight of hand tactics one would use to keep the public's eye on ANYTHING other than his anti-capitialistic bulling regarding those who stood against his administration for the Chrysler bankruptcy. Putting pressure on the banks, giving the unions what they want out of this 'surgical bankruptcy'..? Next of his agenda... Card Check... Trust me friends, it's going to get ugly. But by all means, lets focus on the flu...

Good Point Sgt Regarding Healthcare

It fits in perfectly with his 'Everyone NEEDS government funded Healthcare' plan. Create a little panic... get a little health plan... and a HUGE bill.

Ben

You had a good post at your place. And a Semper fi to ya. I thought you were my other "Gunny" (Anti-liberal Zone), ha. Joke's on me!

I see more backpedaling taking place and I have to laugh. Yes. let's keep changing the story and keep the distractions up.

Nee

Mom never did recover from GBS. Her initial disability was so great and with limited recovery of lost motor function in her legs, there was even a short-lived debate whether it was GBS or polio.
She turned it into an advantage, though. Since she could no longer navigate school hallways, she spearheaded development of schooling for home bound high school students in Phoenix.
First, it was teachers going house to house to tutor kids who would otherwise drop out due to illness or injury (That is how I graduated after a serious auto accident my senior year).
Later as technology became available, there were conference call classes to give students a broader support and feeling more like a "real" high school. The evolution of computers and the internet put things into high gear (unfortunately not before her death).
Ever wonder why one of the first and largest distant learning programs, University of Phoenix, started here? There was already a smaller working model.

Salt

That is awesome!!

When life hands you lemons, baby, make LEM--O-NADE!!!
Had I known about distance learning sooner, my college education would not have been wasted. I am trying to make the lemonade though.
Very cool story. I bet your Ma was the bomb!! Are YOU recovered? :)

Nee

Thanks. Yes, Mom was a special kind of person - and a great inspiration whenever I found myself against what seemed an impenetrable wall. It was hard to find reason for giving up on anything after watching what she went through every day just to do what she loved the most - teaching.
Me? I had a skilled orthopedic surgeon knit me back together, and a stubborn PT (Pain & Torture) put me through the paces. Two years later, I had my draft classification changed back to 1A and was allowed to enlist.

Another example: Mad Cow Disease

...having worked in prion diagnostics, you would have thought that people were dropping like flies from this disease. Yet total worldwide morbidity was about 150 people TO DATE! Yes, not happy for those afflicted, but hardly something to get hysterical over. So far I see little from a medical perspective to suggest that we are all going to die from H1N1.

Nee

Here in Ohio, we've had what? 3 comfirmed cases, no deaths, thousands upon thousands of negative tests, and millions of dollars spent by hospitals who could ill afford the waste, as reimbursement for the work done will likely be nowhere near the total spentactually buying the tests kits and performing the procedure.

I knew from the first that it was just another scare out of Washington, and figured right away that the purpose was to cost hospitals and insurers enough that they would be, perhaps, slightly more receptive to government interference. Obama is a hole. I'll leave it to you to decide which kind.

Arik

I was having a conversation with my favorite adult beverage server last nite. I was interrupted by a supposed "infectious disease" physician who told me that the current flu shot did not contain H1N1. Told me I was grossly misinformed! Um, condescension got him nowhere. Because he knew jack.
There might be a second "wave" of infections but, it is a weak virus. There have been suggestions that the"natural immunity process is the best way to protect. This means find someone with the flu and go have a party!! Like what used to be done with Chicken Pox.
And remember, 36,000 flu deaths pertains to "seasonal" flu, not swine, which also contains mutated strains of the H1N1, type A flu. The one death of a female in Texas contains conflicting information. It said she had underlying medical conditions which caused her death... Then it said that swine flu was confirmed. There are 300 cases here, supposedly(IL). They cannot decide. Drives me crazy.

Nee

Much ado about what, exactly? I think this is a PERFECT example of Obama taking something that should be dealt with, yes, but NOT used to push his agenda. It is ALL this azshat thinks about.
