VP Buzz: McCain's Maverick Pick

21st Century

Perhaps the polygamists need to get into the 21st century. The religious test is a reasonable one, a fair one, and most importantly, consitutional.

Good luck in the veepstakes!

Backhanded comment re Mitt?

Who's looking backwards? LDS do not practice plural marriage. Splinter groups do.

Are you part of the solution of fairness towards LDS or are you part of the trash talking crowd?

What about the constitutional principle of equity and fairness?

Except for your animosity towards Mitt because he's LDS, I enjoy your posts.

Doug

"Perhaps the polygamists need to get into the 21st century. The religious test is a reasonable one, a fair one, and most importantly, consitutional."

May I ask to you want a religious test for judges? I would imagine that you do not (separation of church and state).

I honestly don't know what is wrong with people like you. Romney is a good man with a great family and would make a great VP, and I am not Mormon.

I guess the only thing I can say is that both you and Huckabee ARE bigots.

And "wise woman", Doug does appear to be part of the trash-talking crowd just like Huckabee but without a media forum on Fox News or Rush Limbaugh.

Religious Test Clarified

The "no religious test" clause of the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, section 3, and states that:

“ ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. ”

This has been interpreted to mean that no federal employee, whether elected or appointed, "career" or "political," can be required to adhere to or accept any religion or belief.

I agree

that Romney's religion shouldn't be an issue here. I think he is a good selection.

However, I don't think Mav should be using the Presidential election as his platform for challenging conservatives to "grow."

Religious Test (By Voters) - IS GOOD!

Our founding fathers didn’t want there to be any official religious test in the legal code. On the other hand, the population was well rooted in its Christian heritage at that time, and it was a reasonable expectation for people to behave (at the ballot box) in ways that were customary at that time period. Let’s not forget that children were reading Bibles as a part of their education and solid Biblical grounding was salted into almost every facet of culture. This resulted in a routine “religious qualifier” for not just politicians, but also for business relationships, friendships, and virtually every type of social engagement and relationship. Some today would even characterize this as bigotry. However, more accurate terms would be “traditional values."

This also explains why during the first two centuries of America’s history we witness almost exclusively Presidential candidates espousing mainstream Biblical Christian beliefs.
The wonderful result of what our forefathers established in the United States Constitution was that – as a voter – one may disqualify a candidate for any reason whatsoever.

I agree with your premise that it would show bigotry not tolerated in GOP but i think McCain needs to thinkout of the box and go with a Hutchison, or Fiorina, or some other suprise pick that would show HIM as candidate of change

Dr. Condi Rice would also be a great choice - no one on the planet has more Foreign Policy experience and she seems like a decent person. Having a hand in liberating 53 million human beings in heart of the Middle East is "not too shabby" either.
