Private vs. Public
Coopmeister, perhaps you are confusing private, voluntary behavior and state-involved licensing. When the state gets involved, it becomes an issue of the governed as a whole, not just the couple. So it IS my business.
I went into more detail about this very thing here:

Weird logic.Wlarus
"when someone requests a marriage license (or a domestic partnership or civil union) from the government, which operates on behalf of the governed, that it becomes my business"
Why is this your business? There are many laws, benefits for which an official marriage license is required. Property, etc.
"you must participate in our lives in the manner in which we demand."
Is this true for your marriage? You demand others participate in your life?
My gay sister is as normal, well-adjusted a person as I know..
If she wants to get married...she is entitled to the same civl rights that you and I have.

"Why is this your business?"
Because law is the business of any citizen.
"Is this true for your marriage? You demand others participate in your life?"
Like it or not, a state license means the public is involved. Marriage neutering activists, when they demand marriage licenses for brideless or groomless couples, are demanding public sanction of their pairing as marriage.
"My gay sister is as normal, well-adjusted a person as I know.."
Good for her, and good for you! I'm glad for that.
"If she wants to get married...she is entitled to the same civl rights that you and I have."
And she has them. Want a driver's license? You need to take a driving test. You can't claim effectively that riding your bicycle entitles you to a driver's license.
