Huckabee: I'm from the government and I'm here to help

The Worse Thing

How come its Republicans leading the cash giveaway bandwagon? Can any of these idiots ever point to an economy that actually got better using these idiotic policies? I guess if the democrats win we'll get a super dose of spending stimulus.

Let's take it a step further

Huckabee has also said he thinks a national smoking ban's a good idea.

Now, whether or not you like smoking, the idea of a national ban tells me Huckleberry has no idea of the constitutional limitations on the powers of the government, and THAT is a very dangerous idea from any presidential aspirant, but particularly from a purported "conservative".

That's not conservatism, it's right-wing totalitarianism, which is every bit as dangerous as LEFT wing totalitarianism.

No way can I vote for Huckleberry, under any circumstances.

On another nore, welcome back, J!

I left a response to your comment over at my place. Check it out so I don't repeat it here.

RedHispanic misses the point on Huckabee

Please don't follow the herd just to criticize Huckabee for ideological kicks. Analyze fairly and intelligently.

Huckabee's point is --its a twofer. That is, its not "make work" --like a NewDeal Democrat might do. Rather, in contradistinction to "rebate checks" America will actually **get something** worthwhile with infrastructure investment.

And yes, it will most definately "stimulate" the economy over the longhaul.

Why?

Because, rebate checks are a trully shortsighted idea which are targeted for a momentary consumer spending binge --will we do it again in a few quarters, if the economy is still sluggish?

Whereas everyone knows that our infrastructure is crumbling, and that ONLY government can do that function, and moreover our infrastructure is an integral componant of... you guessed it, the e-c-o-n-o-m-y.

I live in a small midwestern town which has recently landed the building of production plant by a fortune 500 company. We faced stiff competition from a number of other communities --all which offered tax and other incentives.

The company liked the town and they liked that there was a midsized regional university here. But, getting to this place is not efficient; it is a bit off the beaten path (this place used to be nickmnamed "Forgotonia").

Everyone knows that we would not have won this plant had it not been that the people of the region had voted to improve the two-lane state highways which intersect this place by widening them to four-lane over time, and by also approving appropriate bypasses which route highway traffic right passed the industrial park section.

The point is, infrastructure improvements obviously help the economy by making trucking transportion faster and more efficient.

This is on top of what Huckabee was saying about what clogged metro transportation does to commuters.

Rebate checks, fairness and intelligence

Pro, In no way did I mean to endorse rebate checks! I would much rather permanent tax cuts combined with permanent budget cuts and less spending!!

You do have to agree that it does sound like a "New Deal" kind of idea.

The thing is, your example is quite different from having the President call for more Federal spending. You said, "the people of the region had voted" -- very important!! Of course, this makes sense. Its all a part of a competitive market working to win a business over.

I agree that infrastructure is important, and yes, I agree that its important to the economy, but I DON'T agree that it would be an alternative to "rebate checks."

Have you taken a look at a Transportation bill lately? I haven't, but I would bet you $20 easy dollars that the last one to go through is LOADED with pork.

I'll take a rebate check anytime over that--specially if its coming from a "let's spend more money" President. Fact is that its not a "rebate" check...its a refund of MY hard earned money which the government should NOT have taken in the first place. What I do with that money is no one's business by my own.

I can also agree with your statement:

...rebate checks are a truly shortsighted idea which are targeted for a momentary consumer spending binge...

A better solution would be to make tax cuts permanent, AND reduce government spending.

By the way, I appreciate your strong defense of Huckabee and for your visit, but your opening sentence was uncalled for. This isn't about ideological kicks, and I certainly hope no one is following any herd. As far as fairness and intelligence, I'll let my readers decide if I missed the mark.
