It is great that your friends chose to home school. However it is unlikely that everyone will have the skills, household income, interest or patience to do this.

Next comparing home schooling to public schools is not applicable unless you want to assign a cash value to the parents time. Assuming they are relatively well educated. What was the cost to society of them staying out the work force ?

$50,000/yr for 20 yrs? Then the kids only cost about $1,000,000 to educate...
