I could only wish to comment as cogently as you. Though never completely in the "Independent Oil" social strata, I was a friend and distant relative of Bert Fields. The association was sufficiently close to give me a perspective of what really happened to Texas "oil men." Though I am aware of a few notable exceptions (Clint M),most of the Texas oil discoverers and managers used their wealth to create more wealth and foment economic conditions that would encourage everyone to build on his talents rather than simply consume. Bert even created banks in obscure locations with his money as the only reserves. All of the oil patch
