Comment on: My Thoughts on Guns

THE SECOND AMENDMENT AND GUN CONTROL

First, WELCOME to TownHall, as belated as this is. You will find a great deal of support for your views here. I, too, had always interpreted the 2nd ammendment as pertaining to the people's right to defend themselves against ANY entity seeking to deny us our inalienable liberties, including an out-of-control government. There was a definite thought process that went into the making of the first two ammendments. One insured us that what we believed true was also the official law and policy of the government. The second gave us the means by which to defend ourselves against those who would deny the first.

Gun Control = Hitting what you aim at.

Great insight.

The 2nd Amendment&Gun Control-A Solution

I found your blog referenced on kaba.com. I agree with your views on the amendment, in fact, I believe that any honest student of American History would arrive at the same conclusion - the people are responsible to defend against their own government (in addition to foreign foes). However, I believe that the solution is less obvious. All of the rights guaranteed in our form of government were for a 'virtuous people', those who are self-governed. For truly, I only want self-governed individuals carrying a gun! The best protection of our freedoms is to find ways to promote self-government among the citizens. Think about it, if people are self-governed, that is, governed from within, then there will be less need for external government. When people decide to restrict their exercise of freedom because it imposes on someone else, then we make progress toward self-government. The status of gun control in our country is a reflection of the loss of self-government. Let those who love liberty strive to promote and encourage our fellow citizens toward self-government.
