Hi Doc
Everything you say about Democrats & Republicans is true.
Yeh, there's a BUT!
In this day of power politics I don't see a viable third party forming. That is why Ron Paul went Republican instead of staying in this own party.
The Democrat Party was slowly taken over by Communists, starting about 1958.
Communists own the Democratic Party now and George Soros PURCHASED it outright!
The Republican Party does have many bad apples, RINOs.
Some out of greed, some out of cowardice for MSM.
I think we can fix it and we can use your help Doc.

.....The Republican Party does not represent Conservatives anymore ...how are you going to change that without forming a new Party? .....COLOSSUS

I'm with you all the way, with one exception. My Congressman, Buck McKeon, is a staunch conservative (ACU 94%) and HIM I'm going to support, with both my time and my money (given directly, not through the GOP/RNC drones).
But other than that... right on!

.....Your Congressman is a voice in the wilderness whose votes will not count or matter just as all the Bills that Ron Paul has submitted over the years have never gone anywhere ...or the Bills of many other dedicated Conservatives ...
.....The problem is that the Republican Party has abandoned Conservatives so I think they should be allowed to self destruct ...the November election is shaping up to be a blood bath for the Party even if McCain happens to win ...
.....With falling membership and financing the Party will soon be non viable ...then maybe Conservatives can get behind an alternative like the Libertarians to offer an opposition Party to the Communists in the Democrat Party ...
.....The Libertarian Party was founded by disgruntled Republicans in protest to Richard Nixons big Government policies .....COLOSSUS

Damage control
baseballdoc, I generally agree with you, but I also have a good Congressman for my district, and I will support him and vote to keep him in the House. Not because he's a Republican, but because he's a Conservative in the Republican Party.
The Senate is a complete loss for me with Nelson (D) and Mel Martinez (D-Lite)... I'll try to help get Nelson replaced and to defeat Martinez in '10, but neither is likely due to the larger population in the other end of the state.
The more conservatives we can have in the House and Senate, the fewer we must rant against to try to hold the socialists/globalists down.
Meanwhile, we can work hard to make the Republican party the third party and ours, the Constitution or Libertarian party, the majority party. We'll have four years to do it and when we're successful we can start dismantling the damage done. It's time we put Congress on a mission to repeal laws instead of passing more of them.

.....I feel betrayed by the National Party starting with the RNC ...I fear that the next 4 to 8 years are going to be tough ones with a lot of turmoil and pain ...even if McCain wins in 08 ...there is a battle for control of the Party led by the RNC and Conservatives are being squeezed out ...McCain refusing to meet with Dobson might cause Evangicals to desert ...if that happens then Obama wins by default .....COLOSSUS

No argument from me. You're right; my congressman IS an anomaly in this day and age.
But let's also remember that whatever replaces the current GOP -- be it a totally new party or a revamp -- will still have to have people around which to do it. Don't forget that Barr was once a Republican, and a pretty effective one, too.

A Call to Arms
Norman, a frequent poster in TH has invited all to participate in a grassroots effort to come up with an alternative to McCain:
My TH blog, The Blogatorium, has a new mission: To serve as a forum for disenchanted conservatives who cannot in good conscience support John McCain, and want to use their vote wisely and effectively in November.
This endeavor is predicated on the following assumptions:
1. That the GOP has abandoned conservatism, and that conservatives are consequently under no moral, ethical, or other obligation to support the so-called "lesser of two evils."
2. That no true conservative would willingly and enthusiastically support John McCain.
3. That the basic tenets of conservatism are accurately reflected in the "three-legs" model (social, fiscal, and national security), and that a true conservative will embrace all three.
4. That conservatives may, however, differ on the application of each "leg," particularly with respect to questions of faith, and should respect each others' right to do so.
5. That with unprecedented turmoil in both major parties, there has never been a better time to galvanize and mobilize conservative support for a viable, third-party candidate.
6. That compromise is often necessary in politics, but that there comes a time when compromise becomes counterproductive and even suicidal.
7. That the GOP, in making an abusive and manipulative “case” for John McCain, is asking conservatives to put party over principle and to help the GOP destroy the conservative movement.
8. That, in consequence of the aforementioned, a forum should exist wherein conservatives may discuss, debate, and compare the various third-party candidates.
9. That conservatives should, as much as possible, throw their support to ONE third-party candidate, en masse, in order to facilitate a strong showing in November, and future election victories.

BOB BARR AND THE ACLU
.....I know that the ACLU is unpopular with many Conservatives because of their origins and their support for Seperation of Church and State but they stick to their interpretation of the Constitution which is something that riles many Conservatives ...
.....I know that Barr had a good conservative record when he was in Congress and he is a member of the NRA and might get their endorsement if he is nominated by the Libertarians ...if he can get a seat at debates the way Perot did then he can be questioned about his thoughts on the ACLU ...
.....Without the exposure that a seat at the debates would give him, he will be ignored by the media and most likely have about as much success as Ron Paul did when he ran as a Libertarian ...
.....The ACLU did come to the defense of Rush Limbaugh when Florida illegally seized his medical records .....COLOSSUS

.....Conservatives need to get organized and formulate a course of action or we will become as extinct as the Dodo bird ...just as the DNC has taken the black vote for granted ...the RNC has done the same for Conservatives, marginalizing us until we no longer have a voice ...
.....If we can demonstrate with numbers that we have someplace else to go and that our votes can influence election outcomes, as Perot did in '92, or begin winning seats in Congress, then maybe we can influence an exodus of Conservatives from the GOP to a "New Conservative" Party ...it is worth fighting for .....COLOSSUS

You know I am kidding. Always enjoy reading your comments. I will be voting Bob Barr in November. I whole heartedly support a third party to eventually replace the republican party. I agree three parties cannot make it in this country but, there is no reason a current third party cannot replace one of the two current ones. While theoretically, it might be possible to reform the current republican party, to take it back, but I find this alternative fraught with peril and little to no chance of success. Go Bob Barr!!

I feel after this election the conservatives will start to rise up. There is much unrest with us feeling just as you described. If Obama makes it in, I could definitely see the Republican party drop off the map with a new conservative party taking over. If that happens, the conservatives in office will switch to it. The one thing it will need is support. We will have to be ready if a new party arises. Give our support and be activists if needed. We will have four years to spread the conservative word, lets jump to it! haha

.....Delegates for McCain still have the option of changing their votes at the Convention ...I know this is an extreme longshot but stranger things have happened and this is a strange election ...Ron Paul supporters have promised to shake things up so lets wait and see how it all shakes out ...from a Conservative viewpoint the Dream ticket would be Paulin/Inhofe .....COLOSSUS

PS... funny you should mention Perot
The last time I saw the conservative base this riled up was Perot's run against Bush 1. Didn't turn out so well for Bush; Perot got about 20% of the vote, and Bush was put to pasture.
Which is what gave us the 1994 Contract With America revolt during the mid-terms a mere two years later, the very next election.
History's on our side.
