Take Me Out

Re: Detroit

I am a baseball junkie. A couple of friends and I do east coast baseball weekends, including boston, philly, both NY teams, baltimore, washington, etc. The next leg of the tour, being considered for this season, is detroit-pittsburgh-cleveland. by my calculations, its about 2 or 2 1/2 hours between each of those cities, and actually can be done in a Fri-Sat-Sun run. I think fly into Detroit, rent a car, go to the game Fri night, drive to Cleveland, day game, then drive to Pitt on Sunday and fly out after the game (back to DC).

The question is: is it worth coming to Detroit? How is the new park? Should I come heckle Jim Leyland?

re: Detroit

First of all, I don't live in Detroit. I grew up in Findlay, Ohio, about 100 miles south, but Detroit was my favorite team being the closest major league city. I have been to the new park and I think it's a cool place to see a game. It's actually below street level so looking in from the sidewalk outside you can actually see parts of the field. They've made a real effort at bringing the Tiger tradition in by erecting giant statues of team heroes (Kaline, Gehringer, Cobb, etc.) all around the interior walkways.
It may be closer to 3 hours from Detroit to Cleveland but it's still totally doable in a weekend like you're planning. Have a great time and let me know how you like the ballyards. I'm very jealous.

stadium

I live in the Detroit burbs and go downtown for the Tigers a few times a year. It's a great stadium. If you go, go up to the Tigers Den and check out the view from there. It's a restaurant, and they often have a brunch buffet goin on. Make sure to get some cajun peanuts off a vendor on the streets before you go in! :)
Go Tigers!!
