You Thought I Was Kidding?

Welcome

Welcome to Townhall.

Have to agree with you about Obama, though in that video I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just a slip of the tongue.

Anyway, he has said more than enough plainly idiotic things that I don't need to rely on the 57 state quote.

I don't think I have much on Obama on my front page, but if you dig through my site a bit, you will find quite a bit of Obama material. This page has a link to many of the older essays:

I do have one comment. I was about to reply to your original post when I thought your name sounded familiar. I checked and found a Thomas Hibbard, but I have to say I don't think it is you. The statements in this blog so far, and in the link below, just don't sound like they come from the same man:

Thanks For Checking In

I live in Loma Linda, California. I am a retired former chief deputy to a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. One of my duties involved working with the White House administrations of President Nixon through George H.W. Bush. From the website you sent, I can assure you that individual is not me.

You are no doubt right about Obama making a slip of the tongue. I went back in and toned it down. My words were too harsh. It does not change the fact, however, that he is not ready to be President of the United States. But I am even more concerned that so few Americans have so little judgement as to want him as the Democrat Party candidate for the presidency. I'd like to think voters are capable of weeding out poor candidates.

Tom H.

Both of my grandfathers were stationed in the Washington area. My paternal grandfather was a CPO who taught sailing at the Naval Academy, but that was long before your time (1930's). My maternal grandfather was a CMSgt who served as flight engineer on Air Force One from Eisenhower through Nixon, so even before it was called Air Force One. (My father was in the Nat'l Guard, and my military experience is limited to working as a civilian contractor at the Pentagon and Ft. Detrick.)

Returning to the main point of your post, I have to agree with you. I think the Democrats may be over-thinking this. The superdelgates know that Obama is a long shot (at least I hope so), but I think they fear losing the die hard Obama supporters, and so they are reluctant to commit themselves to Clinton.

Of course, Clinton doesn't have much more of a chance than Obama, but at least she didn't alienate the blue collar Democrats, the way Obama did, and she did not snub Florida and Michigan, as did all the other Democrats.

Well, I do disagree with you on one point. I think the media may be overestimating the Obama support. I am still frightened by the amount of support he DOES have, so I am with you there, but I think the Obama-friendly press may be exaggerating the amount of support he has outside of his legion of admirers.

But, as I said, I agree with you that whatever the amount of support he does have, it is frightening that he has taken in so many people with his act. And worse still, that so many believe he is somehow "different" from other politicians.

Oh, yes

Since I gave my ancestors' CV, I should say I currently live in Annapolis, Maryland (well, across the South River in Riva) with my wife, son and my mother. I work for a large university, but, due to some health problems, I am currently working from home. Thankfully my position allows me to do so, and my boss has learned to trust me enough to make that possible.

Air Force One

Andrews: since your maternal grandfather served as a flight engineer on Air Force One I'll share a story that might interest you. In March 1983, I worked with White House staff to invite California elected officials and community leaders to hear President Ronald Reagan speak on his "New Federalism" plan. The speech was held in the Los Angeles Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Some 3,000 guests were invited to attend. The day before the speech President Reagan was winging his way to the West Coast at the same time I was returning to my office after lunch. When I walked into the office suite secretaries were obviously very excited. They urgently told me there was a call holding from someone on Air Force One. I went into my office and the captain of Air Force One came on the line. "Is this Mr. Hibbard?" he said. I said yes. "Just a minute, sir, for Mr. Rhodes," the captain said. Shortly thereafter a steward came on the line. "Is this Mr. Hibbard?" he asked. I responded affirmatively. "Just a minute for Mr. Rhodes." Next Steve Rhodes, Special Assistant to the President, came on the line. After a few short words of greeting the connection between us began breaking up. Soon we were shouting at each other. I understood just enough of his words to get an idea of what I assumed he wanted. He wanted his mother, who lived in LA, to be invited to attend the event. I shouted back that despite the fact I could barely hear him, let alone understand what he was attempting to communicate, I thought I knew what he wanted and not to worry I'd already taken care of it. With that the conversation ended.

I leaned back in my chair and thought about what had just happened. The President of the United States was in that airplane. Always near him is the man who carries the "football" that contains codes needed to start a nuclear war. "And," I said to myself, "the damned telephone doesn't work."

hi guys

I think the real threat is Mrs. Clinton. Obama broke the cardinal rule by stating his socialist views plainly enough for even democrats to hear. Conservatives can hear Clinton clearly enough, but machine democrats miss it...so far. She is almost able to position herself as a "victim" of the looney progressives that axed Lieberman.

Obama has served his purpose for the likes of Ayers and Wright (Jackson and Sharpton, too) he is now a "victim" of racist middle America. As Rush would say, Losing is winning for democrats.

Now we have to get Mrs. Clinton for her associations with ALL of Obamas cohorts AND the Chi-coms.
