Origin of swearing on the Bible

In Bible study this week a question arose regarding Jesus' warnings in Matthew about swearing and oath. He said "Let your yes be yes and your no be no." The warning seemed to emphasize the sacredness of making an oath and how often keeping the oath becomes burdensome. It suggested to me that the practice of oath making for the sake of oath making and not for the intention of laying down your life to keep the oath should not exist.
It also indicated that men and women at that time were making frivolous vows they could not keep as we do today. Breaking a vow makes the vow a bearing of false witness.
My question is when did the practice of swearing on the Bible begin? (even before our founding fathers). If you could provide some history on this issue beginning with the first century AD, I would greatly appreciate it. I realize you cannot make any promisses.
