As a convert to Catholicism, I'm not as pessimistic as you seem to be.

EWTN is having a tremendous impact.

Hundreds of protestant clergy have converted to the church in recent years. This influx of passionate evangelicals and mainline protestants is energizing the Church.

If you don't have EWTN, or don't watch it, check it out.

In particular, look for the Journey Home, which is devoted to recent Catholic converts, primarily former ministers.

I do have and watch EWTN. I can only speak for what I see in my area. I work with a Catholic Men's group that is part of a larger national movement.
