Comment on: Thinking Out Loud

He Told You So (Unplugging Grandma)

Winebarger, you continue

to choose subjects that attract no comments. And to create issues that frighten you for no reason.

We cannot know what Mr Obama's grandmother discussed with her doctor by listening to Mr Obama because he was not there.

We cannot reach any reasonable conclusion from any of that as it might be applicable to end of life counseling. You know of course that such counseling has been law since 2003 (and I believe it has been law earlier).

There is just the hint of a reason to think that a hip replacement for an elderly woman with cancer, a stroke, etc might tend towards fraud. It is not likely that she was going to walk anywhere, nor that she was in a wheelchair in a meaningful way. Given her health, such surgery moves nearer doctor assisted suicide than a benefit program.

This is a conversation

that must occur, between doctors and patients when end of life issues are imminent. A system that mandates what the doctor can and cannot say is a problem. By the way, my father is terminally ill,he has Parkinsons. He fell 2 years ago and had ahip replacement. His quality of life is not great but it would be far worse if he still was in the pain he was before the surgery. Who wants some impassionate third party to make that decision?

Thank you for your story

Wil, now more than ever we must be informed of what our government plans on our behalf. I hope the debate is going to reshape HR3200 into a more palable bill.
