The Electoral College was instituted in part to defend against mob mentality, not to mention keeping the most populous states from choosing the president. Your prose is excellent, but your fears are unfounded I think.

After the 2000 election there was significant media discussion about changing the Constitution provisioon for the Electoral College (EC)- by 'the LEFT mob' of course. I was encouraged to see that discussion wasn't revisited after the 2004 election.
