This is nothing new. Recall when he called Pennsylvania voters ignorant hicks who cling to guns and G-d because of their economic problems, he then turned around and said "I didn't mean it like that... It wasn't about YOU, just some other people..."

So he is sticking to his pattern here, it is just that the press is finally conceding that they have to report his mistakes rather than cover them up.
