Plastics and short range thinking

The plastic bag "issue" that the author refers to is typical of the kind of knee jerk reactions that typify so many people today, who emote rather than think. "Let's do something now" without thinking of the consequences. A reef was built of tires in the 1970's, I believe, off the coast of Florida to "help marine life." I in now being removed because it is bad for marine life. The move toward grain based ethanol fuels is another example. The advocates did not consider the impact on world food prices. (Who cares if people starve, as lopng as we have green fuel?)

In a similar vein, if grain based ethanol is renewable, so is paper. Paper companies replant trees; in fact, they were some of the early advocates of reforestation. Has anyone figured out the enviromental impact of deinking recycled paper and transporting it to paper mills, which are usually not in urban areas?
