The homeless population in New York City has risen a stunning 18 percent since 2011, forcing the city to open nine new emergency homeless shelters in June and July. New York now accommodates a crushing total of 43,731 under the costly bureaucracy known as the Department of Homeless Services.

These horrifying numbers show the hollowness of Obama administration claims that the economy is sharply bouncing back. By every measure, poverty has gotten far worse under Obama, despite huge increases in spending on food stamps and other so-called assistance programs for the poor. The homeless explosion shows the utter bankruptcy of liberal governance—since New York City has long considered itself a generous and progressive bastion of social welfare policies. The city’s well-advertised willingness to provide free shelter may in fact encourage continued expansion of the homeless population.
