Pushing America Over a Cliff

On my radio show, Senator John McCain condemned a colleague’s remarks as “one of the most irresponsible speeches I’ve ever heard in this town- and I’ve heard a lot.” He referred to Senator Patty Murray of Washington relishing the idea of the nation going over a “fiscal cliff” at the end of the year, with automatic tax hikes on every household. In 2013, she predicted, Democrats could restore low rates for the poor and middle class, while blocking any GOP efforts to include wealthier households in the rescue. In other words, she’ll risk a new recession – flatly predicted by the Congressional Budget Office if taxes go up in January – simply to punish prosperous families. Yet even if Washington used all resulting revenue for deficit reduction rather than new spending, it would close barely 7% of our current disastrous deficits.
