Those who blame Israel for ongoing turmoil in the Middle East love to suggest that Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria—the so-called “settlements” on the West Bank—represent the main obstacle to peace and stability. But Israelis have already tried the policy of dismantling settlements, with disastrous results.
In a bid for peace 7 years ago, the previous Israeli government forcibly removed 9,000 Jewish residents from their long-time homes in Gaza, giving Palestinians a chance to build their own state free of Israeli military or civilian presence.
Since this “disengagement,” Palestinian militants have launched 9,000 rocket attacks on Israel. Fortunately, the new Iron Dome defense system successfully intercepts nearly all these rockets, but the world shouldn’t forget the lesson that giving in to Palestinian pressure and forcing Jews from their homes doesn’t promote peace; it produces violence.
