The Portland, Oregon school board voted unanimously to require that any presentation by military recruiters must be balanced by equal access for “counter recruiters” stressing the negative side of service to our country.

This official endorsement of anti-military, anti-American messages singles out our armed services for disrespectful treatment. Schools are required by federal law to allow visits by military recruiters to the same extent they welcome representatives of colleges or prospective employers, but Portland isn’t inviting “counter-recruiters” to provide negative perspectives on those other options. Only the military gets such treatment and the school board resolution explicitly stresses the “cons involved in military service” and excludes the Armed Forces from a list of service options for students.

Such attitudes reflect outrageous extremism by education officials unconnected with a public that reveres and honors the US military.
