The New York Times found something worth celebrating in the nation’s hard times, running the encouraging headline “GAINS MADE IN EQUALITY OF INCOMES IN DOWNTURN.” The story showed women earning 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, up from 79 cents 18 months ago. “What you see in these earnings is another step towards financial equality,” crowed Professor Betsy Stevenson of the University of Pennsylvania. But close reading of statistics showed both men and women hurting—with women’s earnings dropping 1% since 2007, and men losing a full 6%.
When liberals consider it a triumph if men suffer even more than women, they show they care more about equality than prosperity. They also fail to acknowledge that nearly all women are connected to men as partners or relatives, so they hardly can rejoice over male reverses.
