No issue unites social and economic conservatives more powerfully than the current, courageous GOP drive to eliminate all federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

The organization insists that government money doesn’t directly fund abortions but social conservatives (rightly) insist it’s still immoral to provide taxpayer support to a birth control advocacy organization that aborts millions of babies every year. But even moderates and libertarians, who may defend keeping abortion legal, hate the idea of sending more than $300 million a year to a private group with a controversial agenda at a time of crushing deficits.

When we need to cut government back to bare essentials, no one can argue that money for Planned Parenthood should be a priority—especially when private donors or the recipients of contraceptive services can pay the bills far more appropriately than government.
