In the ferocious debate about extending Bush era tax rates, liberals claimed that Republicans wanted to give away government money and send big checks to millionaires and billionaires.

This is a total distortion, since the GOP position sought no new tax cuts for anyone, but no new tax increases either. No one wants to give government money to taxpayers, or even let taxpayers keep more of their own money. The Republican position was simply to keep the tax rates where they are, since there’s no way that a crushing tax hike on job creators would help the struggling economy. Democrats claim conservatives prefer to give government money to millionaires, rather than the unemployed.

That’s simply not true: conservatives want the government to spend less money, period—and to take less money away from the battered private economy for bureaucratic programs of any sort.
