In the days before Thanksgiving, leading members of the media and political establishments disgraced themselves with over-wrought hysteria about new screening procedures at airports. Influential conservative talk show hosts suggested a deliberate plot by the Obama administration to bankrupt the airlines so they could be taken over like the car companies. Congressman Ron Paul appeared with notorious 9/11 “Truther” Alex Jones and validated his comparison of TSA inspections with Nazi procedures during the Holocaust.
TV news networks eagerly anticipated mass resistance and a total breakdown during the busiest travel days of the year. As it happened, the new screening machines and the pat down option functioned smoothly, with fewer reported delays or problems than previous years. When prominent commentators pointlessly agitate the public and get a major story so horribly wrong, apologies or at least embarrassment becomes appropriate.
