The new Jennifer Aniston movie THE SWITCH flopped miserably in its opening weekend, finishing eighth at the box office despite its popular star and huge promotional budget.

This is the third example this year of sharp public rejection of what Hollywood calls “Turkey Baster” movies—stories about glamorous women choosing artificial insemination without direct participation by a man. Jennifer Lopez previously starred in the embarrassing bomb THE BACKUP PLAN, about an aging single woman inseminated with twins, while Julianne Moore and Annette Bening played gay partners who make two children with an unknown sperm donor in THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT.

Despite critical acclaim, the Moore-Bening movie also drew tepid box office response, showing that despite Hollywood’s odd obsessions, most Americans like the idea of babies conceived the old fashioned way, involving both a mother and a father.
