Republicans run the risk of repeating President Obama’s biggest mistake regarding health insurance reform: focusing on this narrow issue when people care far more about jobs, deficits and the overall economy. If conservatives merely continue fighting over health care – a battle that long ago began to bore the public --they’ll face an overwhelming desire to move on and to turn the page. Yes, we need to rollback provisions of Obamacare, but proper context is important. When Republicans talk about repealing so-called reforms as part of a larger, focused drive to bring spending and deficits under control, and to build durable economic recovery, then they should find a receptive national audience. Health care is one important part of the biggest challenge facing the country: slowing the runaway growth of government and spending that threatens to bankrupt our society.
