The current dispute between the Obama administration and the government of Israel stems from a radical change in American policy, not any shift by the Israelis. Every Israeli government in the nation’s 62 year history - whether left wing, right wing, or in between-- enthusiastically encouraged home-building in Jerusalem. This construction accommodated vast increases in the city’s population – from 165,000 in 1948, to 763,000 today. In recent years, Arab population grew even more rapidly than Jewish population – with Palestinians now comprising 30% of residents. These Arab citizens can purchase homes anywhere in Israel, so it seems bizarre that the President Obama wants to limit Israeli Jews to certain segregated neighborhoods in their own capital city. The administration’s unprecedented determination to keep Jews out of parts of Jerusalem is entirely responsible for the current tension with America’s long-time ally, Israel.
