Some prominent conservative activists recently launched a drive to impeach Barack Obama, insisting his leftist programs constitute the sort of “high creams and misdemeanors” that should provoke the president’s removal. Leaders of the Impeach Obama Campaign describe the president as a “dictator,” “monomaniac” and leader of “a cold-blooded gang that despises America’s prosperity”. They warn that Obama will force us “to live in chains…in servitude to the iron will of the government…”. Such hysterical rhetoric only serves to make conservatives look more frightening than Obama himself, and will push wavering independents toward the president’s camp. When Republicans impeached Bill Clinton, portraying him as a dangerous ethical monster, the public rallied to his support as a lovable (or at least forgivable) rogue. A drive for impeachment, coupled with apocalyptic warnings, won’t isolate Obama, but it may isolate conservatives.
