A Fox News-Opinion Dynamics Poll exposed glaring contradictions in public responses to the economic crisis. A slight majority supported the stimulus package, but 73% thought the plan would make no difference in their personal situation or else make things worse.

Among Democrats, majorities said they “trusted” the federal government, but by two-to-one they also agreed that most elected officials were dishonest and unethical. Overwhelming majorities of Democrats said the federal government should take “responsibility” for providing food, housing, and healthcare—and yet 88% of them still identified the U.S. as the best country on earth in which to live.

Amazingly, liberals don’t acknowledge that part of what makes America wonderfully distinctive is our status as one of the rare places on earth that doesn’t agree with their instinct to rely on government for all basic needs.
