Speaking to reporters in the Rose Garden Thursday during a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Obama failed to deny the White House knew about the IRS inappropriately targeting conservative groups.
"I can assure you I certainly did not know anything about the IG report before it was leaked to the press," Obama said after being specifically asked to assure the American people that nobody in the White House had any knowledge of IRS targeting. "I promise you this, the moment I found out about it my focus has been to get it fixed. "
President Obama went on to explain that when something in government is broken, it is his job to fix it. Yesterday Obama directed Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to handle holding people accountable for the IRS case.
"The IRS may not have had enough guidance about what they were doing," Obama said after suggesting new laws are needed to prevent inappropriate targeting from happening again.
When asked about recent comparisons to Richard Nixon, Obama said, ""You can go ahead and read the history and draw your own conclusions."
