Michelle Obama Now Trying to Control What the Military Eats

First Lady Michelle Obama is still on her food crusade and this time, she's going after the military, saying poor nutrition in our armed forces is a "national security" issue.

First lady Michelle Obama said Thursday that poor nutrition in the military was a "national security issue," and praised the armed forces for taking steps to bring healthier options onto bases.

"Our military leaders know that this is not just a diet issue; it's not just a health issue. This is truly a national security issue," Obama said. "According to a recent Army study, more than a quarter of our nation's 17- to 24-year-olds are too overweight to serve in our armed forces today. And even those who make the cut often struggle in basic training."

Obama was in Little Rock, Ark. to announce a new healthy food initiative within the Department of Defense that will bring more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat options to 1,000 military dining facilities, affecting nearly 1.5 million troops.

"That means more DoD installations will offer the kind of fresh, healthy food that the Air Force's Food Transformation Initiative helped bring here to Little Rock," Obama said, referring to a pilot program launched at the Little Rock Air Force Base.

First of all, I'm all for feeding the troops healthier food, but I doubt what Michelle Obama has to offer is appealing to them. Surely our troops really want a fluffy whole grain muffin after long day at boot camp. Second, why is she concerned about not enough people joining the Army, when her husband just gutted our military in favor of the nanny state and entitlement programs. And third, this is going to be expensive:

"The DoD is also going to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of every single military base in America to make sure they're serving healthy food not just to those in uniform, but to their families," the first lady said. "They'll be looking to improve the food served in dining facilities, school cafeterias, vending machines, snack bars, and any other places where military families purchase food."

In closing, President Obama has cut the armed forces, citing budgetary issues, so his wife is willing to spend millions of defense dollars on some fancy study to evaluate "how bad the food is," while her husband claims there isn't enough money to keep troops on the payroll.
