Jonathan Garthwaite - Democrats Don't Need Republicans To Tax And Spend - Again
Posted: 2/6/2009 11:07:01 AM EST
Democrats and their allies in the media love to tell Republicans that being obstructionist is not politically wise... ?but is it? The Democrats don't need Republicans pass their spending bill. They need them for political cover though and they're hoping they can peel off a few Senators by cutting a few billion here or there.

Before Republicans take political advice from Obama, Pelosi and Reid, they should think back to 1993.

In 1993, Clinton pushed through a major tax increase without one single Republican vote in either the House or Senate. Al Gore even had to travel to the Senate to cast the tie-breaking vote.

How'd that work out for Bill?

Times executive editor hints at online access fees

In an online question-and-answer exchange with readers this week, Keller said that although advertising generates the bulk of online revenue, "a lively, deadly serious discussion continues within The Times about ways to get consumers to pay for what we make."

Do you really think that the $1 Trillion in stimulus is a one-time event?
Democrats want to use the big spending package designed to jump-start the staggering economy to send billions to long-term programs to help poor and disabled school children.

President Barack Obama's recovery plan amounts to the biggest increase ever in federal money for schools. Many Republicans say it is not a short-term boost but an immense expansion that will be impossible to roll back.

President Obama apparently launched the first military action of his presidency this morning but WH press secretary Robert Gibbs wouldn't talk about the story during his daily press briefing. He was repeatedly asked but would not budge from "I'm not going to discuss the matter." Long live transparency.

Jonathan Garthwaite - Off-Key
Posted: 1/20/2009 12:29:00 PM EST
Perhaps I'm not an impartial judge but President Obama's speech seemed very off-key to me. As much as Obama's campaign speeches contained liberalism, I was always impressed by his speechwriters and his delivery.

Today was not the same. Perhaps the cold got to him but the speech sounded like they were trying to thread the needle of the sobering reality we face and lofty hope and change from the campaign -- and missed the mark. I am going to have to read the speech again but right now it seems he failed to meet expectations.

As I said, who cares what us conservative types think.
