In their latest effort to scare the country and lawmakers into dealing with the sequester, the White House is now saying that because of spending cuts to the Department of Homeland Security, there will be an increase in illegal immigration. According to the Washington Times,
The Obama administration on Monday warned the nation to expect an increase in illegal immigration if the automatic budget cuts go into effect Friday — the latest caution from a White House determined to raise the heat on congressional Republicans.
President Obama has framed the choice as one between higher taxes or lower security, bolstered by Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano’s warning Monday that the U.S. Border Patrol will be forced to furlough agents, costing nearly a quarter of the workforce.
“I don’t think we can maintain the same level of security,” Ms. Napolitano said. “If you have 5,000 fewer Border Patrol agents, you have 5,000 fewer Border Patrol agents.”
But Republicans said the White House is setting up “a false choice” between tax increases and security. They said the other alternative is to make $85 billion in spending cuts in other parts of the budget, rather than the across-the-board cuts that make up the sequester.
So it looks like the Obama administration will really do anything in order to scare the Republicans into making a deal on sequestration. When will the President realize that he is the one that set this into motion? It is not the Republican’s fault that he made spending cut promises that he no longer can keep. The President needs to stop threatening the loss of jobs and find a way to cut $85 billion from the budget. The ominous threats are no longer working in getting compromise. There are other ways to cut this money from the budget, but Democrats don’t seem willing to take a “page by page” look at it like they said over the last several years.
Until then we can expect more doomsday situation threats from the White House. What’s next, aliens invading? A massive outbreak of the bird flu? Tornados ripping across the country? We are sick of the threats, do your job!
