The Supreme Court has halted gay marriage in Utah while a federal court will consider the state's appeal. Marriage licenses to same-sex couples began to be issued following a December 20, 2013 ruling by a district court judge that the state's ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.

The state quickly appealed the decision. Utah's ban on same-sex marriage was passed by voters in 2004.

Roughly 900 same-sex couples received marriage licenses in Utah before the Supreme Court blocked any additional unions today.
