Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been out bewailing the impact of the sequester on his department, threatening that it could result in (gasp!) civilian personnel cuts next year.
At the same time, the Washington Post reported on a memo from the Department's Defense Information Systems Agency to their colleagues. It urges them to reach their "spending goal" for the year, worrying that "Our available funding balances remain large in all appropriations — too large to spend.” Of course, if the full amount appropriated isn't spent, then -- horror! -- their appropriation for next year may not be as large.
This little vignette highlights the disrespect in which Washington holds your money -- and mine. While Chuck Hagel is impersonating Chicken Little because of the sequester, within his own department, there is so much (taxpayer!) money that they are struggling to spend it all.
