The Big Government overreaching that characterizes the Obama presidency has made libertarianism more popular than ever. But there's one area -- legalization of marijuana -- where more "freedom" isn't necessarily a good idea.
Writing in today's Wall Street Journal, Dr. Samuel Wilkinson notes that medical research has shown a clear link between marijuana use and schizophrenia. This fact, too often unreported in the debate over marijuana legalization, should be factored in when legalization advocates start toting up the costs that would be saved if the "war on drugs" were called off. You know the homeless people too often left muttering to themselves in doorways and on grates in many American cities? Most of them are schizophrenics, and instituting a drug regime that will make more of them doesn't seem like a good idea. The mental damage is reported to be most acute for those who have been heavy marijuana users in their late teens or early 20's.
The studies aren't good news for Jeff Spicoli, but they're important for the rest of us to keep in mind.
