Chuck Hagel has been answering questions today on the Hill, and there's bipartisan agreement that he's not doing a very good job.
Courtesy of the Washington Free Beacon, here are Hagel's 7 Worst Moments in round one of questioning from the Senate Armed Services Committee.
There's no denying that many of his Hagel's views -- on Israel, the surge, Iran and nuclear disarmament -- are, to put it charitably, hard to justify. He even opposed President Obama's surge in Afghanistan. So after all the questions Hagel's been fielding, there's just one for President Obama: Why choose him for the post of Secretary of Defense when there was a superbly qualified female alternative available who would have been easily confirmed with bipartisan support?
Perhaps Hagel represents the President's true views more than his supporters would like to admit, and more than Americans should be comfortable acknowledging. When a piece in The Atlantic actually asks, "Is Chuck Hagel a Pacifist?" that's not a good sign for America's military and its national security.
