Amanda Carpenter - Sunday Read of the Day
Posted: 2/15/2009 10:39:30 AM EST
If you didn't catch this story on Eric Cantor on Drudge, try to find time to give it a read today.

Here's an excerpt:
"As Republicans confronted President Barack Obama in another budget battle last week, their leadership included another new face: Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who as the party's chief vote wrangler is as responsible as anyone for the tough line the party has taken in this first legislative standoff with Obama. This battle has vaulted Cantor to the front lines of his party as it tries to recover from the losses of November. As Republican whip, Cantor succeeded again on Friday in denying the White House the support of a single House Republican on the stimulus bill."

Amanda Carpenter - Axelrod Won't Rule Out Fairness Doctrine

Senior White House Adviser David Axelrod wouldn't take the Fairness Doctrine off the table in an interview with Fox News's Chris Wallace this morning.

Roll the tape, relevant transcript below:

WALLACE: "Will you rule out re-imposing the Fairness Doctrine?"

AXELROD: "I'm going to leave that issue to Julius Genachowski – our new head of the FCC – and the President to discuss. I don't have an answer for you now."

Amanda Carpenter - Burris Has a New Story
Posted: 2/14/2009 5:19:18 PM EST
The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting Sen. Roland Burris (D.-Ill) has submitted a new affidavit, with potentially damaging information, to the Illinois State House regarding his relationship with former Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Burris now admits Blagojevich's brother, Robert, asked him for up to $10,000 in campaign cash before the Blagojevich selected him to fill President Obama's vacated Senate seat.

Robert Blagojevich chaired the governor's Friends of Blagojevich campaign fund.

The Sun-Times reports this is a third version of events Burris has offered to officials regarding his appointment.

Burris had previously sworn he had no contact with Blagojevich, or his representatives, before the appointment was made. Burris later revealed he spoke with Blagojevich's chief of staff. In his most recent statement says he spoke with at least four persons close to the governor about his interest in becoming a senator.

Amanda Carpenter - Props for Eric Cantor

Republican House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) has helped keep the GOP in line on TWO votes on the stimulus package.

Am I the only one who thinks some props are in order for Mr. Cantor?

Amanda Carpenter - Thoughts on Transparency
Posted: 2/13/2009 4:10:38 PM EST
Ok, so by now we all realize Obama isn't going to make good on his big promises of bringing transparency to Washington.

But you know who IS bringing transparency to DC? The GOP.

I've gotten so many clips of YouTube videos, emails, etc from various Republican members of Congress explaining their opposition to the 1,000 page bill, I think Obama is going to be sorry they ever brought the subject up in the first place.

They're all on the airwaves, they're all on Twitter and they're all on message. Just look at what's happening in the stimulus debate.  More information and transparency works in their favor and against the Democrats.

No, the GOP probably won't win this fight, but their battle armor is getting stronger.

The White House just put the stimulus bill up for "public review."

Leave a comment if you feel like taking the time...

Seeing as how this went live as the House was voting on the legislation, I sure can't see how the Administration cares about opposing comments.

Amanda Carpenter - No One Has Read It
Posted: 2/13/2009 12:32:23 PM EST
Check out this inquiry Rep. Tom Price made on the House floor today. He's basically complaining no one has had time to read the stimulus bill and questioning procedure since members ARE, at least in theory, supposed to read legislation before voting on it.

PRICE: “It is my understanding then it is the ruling of the chair, the ruling of the speaker after having this bill made available to the members of the House after 11 or 12 o’clock last night, over 1,000 pages, it’s the ruling of the Speaker this is to have been considered read even though it is physically impossible for any member to have read this?"

CHAIR:“That is correct.”

Amanda Carpenter - Stimulus Numbers
Posted: 2/13/2009 10:29:55 AM EST
Boatloads of information is coming in about the final version of the stimulus bill. Here is what I'd like to pass on:

-Only 5.9%, or $47 billion, of the entire bill's spending is allocated for infrastructure projects. 3.5 percent of that is devoted to highway construction. When Democrats say they have included $150 billion for infrastructure they are including the funding earmarked to renovate federal buildings.

-The $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts remains in the bill, as does the $2 billion for the Neighborhood Stabilization Fund, a pile of money ACORN would be able to apply to the government to get.

-$15 million to preserve historically black colleges and universities.

-$170 million for climate change research and another $400 million for NASA to conduct climate change research.

-$650 million for digital TV coupons.
