This May, 14, 1942, U. S. Army Air Corps photograph, provided by the National Archives, College Park, Md., shows the burning tanker Potrero del Llano, a Mexican ship heading to New York that was sunk on May 14, 1942 by a German U-boat, about 15 miles southeast of Miami’s Biscayne Bay. It carried about 1.8 million gallons of oil aboard. A new government report details 87 shipwrecks that could pollute U.S. waters with oil. Most were sunk during World War II. The potential for pollution is less than scientists had expected. They estimate that far less oil will leak into the ocean than the BP oil spill of 2010, which spewed roughly 200 million gallons into the Gulf of Mexico alone. However, six leaks are considered potentially significant coastal pollution problems. Study author Lisa Symons said Monday those six keep her up at night. Five are off the Florida coast, one just 15 miles from shore. (AP Photo/National Archives, College Park, Md)

FILE - This Nov. 19, 2012 file photo shows the high-flow release of water into the Colorado River from bypass tubes at Glen Canyon Dam in Page, Ariz. An advocacy group is calling the Colorado River the nation's most endangered waterway. An annual American Rivers report being released Wednesday April 17, 2013, doesn't call pollution the problem. It instead cites drought and demand. (AP Photo/The Arizona Republic, Rob Schumacher, file) MARICOPA COUNTY OUT; MAGS OUT; NO SALES

FILE - In this Aug. 21, 2012 file photo, residents march during a demonstration against the Conga gold and silver mining project in Mamacocha Lagoon, Peru. Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp. has seen its $5 billion Minas Conga project in Peru stalled amid violent protests and water pollution allegations. In country after country, the world’s biggest miners are facing new environmental standards, confronting changing tax and currency laws and defending long-term contracts they thought were written in stone. More pollution is likely to mean bumpier flights for trans-Atlantic travelers, researchers say in a report published Monday April 8 2013, predicting increased turbulence over the north Atlantic as carbon dioxide levels rise.
