One of the most enduring songs from the 1957 Broadway musical, "The Music Man" is named "Trouble."

I'm always amused by national news polls showing that few Americans like the job Republicans are doing in Congress, as if this is somehow a precursor to the outcome of the 2012 House and Senate elections.

US election season is clearly upon us as US President Barack Obama has moved into full campaign mode. Part and parcel of that mode is a new bid to woo Jewish voters and donors upset by Obama's hostility to Israel back in the Democratic Party's fold.

President Obama's had a rough summer, from his weak performance in the debt ceiling debate to the daily deluge of bad economic news. Polls show his approval numbers falling. Today, his overall approval number (in the latest Gallup Poll) is a meager 40 percent. That's a ten-point drop since Memorial Day.

Everyone in politics should heed the advice of baseball legend Casey Stengel: “Never make predictions, especially about the future.”

Days after an earthquake and a hurricane in the nation's capital, there were no locusts as some local wags nervously joked, but a forecast of "heads exploding all over Washington."

The president, of course, isn't in either business specifically, but in a larger sense he's been investing our money, picking the businesses he thinks will fuel economic expansion, new jobs and the technology of the future, and rebuild the nation's fraying infrastructure.

National polls measuring support during the primary season are suspect because we don't have national primaries. We have state-by-state primaries and caucuses.

Electing Barack Obama was like, let’s say, getting a face tattoo in the likeness of Che Guevara. Somehow over the next 20 years, we must find a way to get rid of it.

After President Obama's faltering, uncertain performance in the debt-ceiling crisis, and with polling showing self-described “conservatives” outnumbering “liberals” by crushing, consistent margins, Republicans ought to face the upcoming presidential race with eagerness and confidence.

Later this week, Heritage Action will release our first legislative scorecard, which will show which Members of Congress are saying the right things AND doing the right things. Conversely, those who say one thing and do another will no longer be able to hide. This will be a revealing barometer of a lawmaker’s willingness to fight for principled conservative policies in Congress.

On Aug. 2, the ripple effect from New York’s recently passed same-sex “marriage” law bumped up against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The Star-Ledger suggested Christie “should consider taking a page out of [New York Gov.] Cuomo’s playbook,” by which they meant that Christie ought to force-feed the public with same-sex “marriage” just like Cuomo did.

Who says presidential debates and straw polls don't matter? The field of Republican presidential candidates has narrowed a bit after the presidential debate-cum-straw poll at Ames, Ia., home of Iowa State, corn-fed beauties of every species, and the GOP's straw-in-the-wind poll.

Straw polls are notoriously overrated. This observation applies especially to the over-hyped one held most recently in Ames, Iowa over the weekend.
