Freshman Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is just the latest in a long series of public figures to be reviled for "McCarthyism" following his recent questioning of Chuck Hagel, President Obama's nominee for secretary of defense. The response? Conservatives have rushed to defend their own against the charge. To understate the case, that's not enough. It's time to debunk McCarthyism itself.
Harry Reid may be majority leader of the U.S. Senate, but that's just his day job. His real calling, his true vocation, the arena in which he seems most his lowdown self, is that of ax man. And he's got a real talent for it. By now there are few tricks of that dirty trade he hasn't mastered. Sen. Reid seems to enjoy the seamy side of politics so much it's hard to envision him being anything but the crass pol he is and may always be.
Fifty years from now, everyone will agree that Karl Rove committed treason by revealing the identity of CIA "spy" Valerie Plame, tea partiers shouted the N-word at a black congressman and Duke lacrosse players gang-raped a stripper.
“The hypocrisy of Democrats on this! You remember, it’s Democrats and liberals in the media who take endless pride in having opposed McCarthyism. The essence of McCarthyism is to use a high place – high office – to make innuendo, unsubstantiated charges, and then destroy other people by means of doing that.”
