In this photo taken on Nov. 25, 2011, statues of spirits in search of evolution 'Exu', left, and 'Pomba Gira', are illuminated with candles at an altar during a ceremony at an Umbanda house of worship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Intolerance and outright hostility against Umbanda, as well as against Brazil's other major African-descended religion Candomble, have recently returned to the spotlight as religious-freedom activists cry foul over the demolition of a house known as Umbanda's birthplace. Residents rest in the entrance of a traditional alleyway, or Hutong , in central Beijing August 21, 2011. Courtyard houses, known as "Siheyuan" in Chinese, used to be one of Beijing's most distinctive features, with families living in rooms surrounding a central courtyard. Their elaborate entrances lined alleyways, called "hutongs", that criss-crossed the city. With Beijing's fast evolution into a modern metropolis, more and more hutongs are beginning to disappear. FILE - In this June 1, 2009 file photo, U.S. medical personnel wait for the arrival of helicopters carrying wounded soldiers at the U.S. hospital in Bagram Air base, north of Kabul, Afghanistan. Critical care flights are part of a big evolution in getting wounded troops back to the U.S., which took about three weeks on average during the Vietnam War. That process can now take as little as three days, depending on the patient's needs. (AP Photo/Rafiq Maqbool, File)
