The politics of cynicism
Barack Obama’s 2006 bestseller The Audacity of Hope gave us a number of clues as to how he would govern based on his worldview. We can’t say we weren’t warned.
The president of the United States really needs a minder. Or at least an aide who'll always tell him when the microphone that's catching his every embarrassing word is open, and broadcasting his buddy-buddy chitchat with some foreign leader to the whole country. And the whole world.
"My rival in this race," President Obama announced early in 2007, "is not other candidates. It's cynicism." It's now clear that what he meant by this was other people's cynicism -- not his own.
