Circular firing squads are about as helpful as they sound, yet they are something at which some Republicans excel. I do my best to avoid engaging in them. To paraphrase President Reagan, my 80 percent friend is not my 20 percent enemy. But sometimes my 80 percent friends do something 100 percent stupid, and pretending they didn’t could cause more damage than calling them out on it.

It's a safe bet that most conservative Republicans would rush to support a
political leader with the following record, especially in a traditionally
Democratic state:

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has become the eighth Republican governor to agree to expand Medicaid coverage in his state under the provisions of Obamacare.

Why should the Republicans we've elected stand up to cut spending and cut Government when the base is not willing to do the same?

After defeating Richard Lugar, he should have been able to easily retain the GOP’s Senate seat in a state that Mitt Romney won by 10 points.

“Superstorm” Sandy killed more than 100 people, destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, and left millions without food, water, electricity, sanitation or shelter for days or even weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain focused on its victims, many of whom are still grieving as they struggle with the storm’s wintry aftermath and try to rebuild their lives.

We know Romney was too conservative in the primaries and too moderate in the general.
We know Romney didn't run enough ads in the Spring then ran too many ads in the Fall.
We know Republicans depended too much on their turnout operation and too little on messaging.
We know Republicans depended too much on messaging and too little on their turnout operation.
We know the GOP and the Super PACs were too focused on fundraising and we know the Obama campaign raised more than enough money.
We know … well, you know what we know.

We conservatives may never reach a consensus among ourselves as to the main factors that caused our election defeat, but surely we can agree that we must do a better job of selling our ideas.

Liberal media outlets presented President Obama as a competent and compassionate leader in the time of a natural disaster, last week’s Hurricane Sandy. Some attribute Obama’s slight bump up in the polls to the hurricane.

I like Stephen Colbert. His brand of humor is very funny, and he reminds us how important it is to sometimes laugh at our politicians.

The first time I saw Chris Christie on television, shortly after he became governor of New Jersey, my immediate reaction was, "My Gosh! A Talking Republican!" It was almost like seeing a talking giraffe or a talking salamander.

South Carolina is not a swing state. Solidly Republican, it will vote for Mitt Romney by a large margin this November. So why would Gov. Chris Christie, a top Romney supporter and surrogate as well as the GOP convention's keynote speaker, take time out of an extremely busy schedule to visit the South Carolina delegation at the Republican convention in Tampa?

The future of the Republican Party was on display in Tampa, Fla., as the roll of speakers before Mitt Romney provided a preview of nomination battles in 2016 and beyond.

The delayed opening of the Republican National Convention worked to the advantage of the GOP by both heightening anticipation and forcing the elimination of extraneous speakers, which there are always too many of at these things.

The Republican National Convention started off as an anxiety-ridden, soggy, depressing mess on Monday morning. By Tuesday night, the Democratic Party and Barack Obama in particular had to be an anxiety-ridden, soggy, depressing mess.

Tuesday night was Good Cop/Bad Cop night at the Republican National Convention. Ann Romney played the good cop; the keynote speaker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, played the bad cop.

The theme for this year's Republican National Convention in Tampa is We Did Build That! It's an interesting choice of a theme. There are a lot of options this year: Governor Romney is running against a president who simply hasn't got anything right. Even the death of Osama Bin Laden, it turns out, is something that he bungled, since we saw him "spike the football" about it when his poll numbers started looking scary (incidentally, they haven't got any better since then).
