I'm not troubled by the opening quote. in fact, I take it as a compliment. It means we are true to our calling, and to the purpose for which we were sent down to Egyptian slavery.

That makes no sense. You were not sent to Egypt for slavery, but for food. The slavery happend hundreds of years later. I imagine any Jew could have left; but, the belly was full. Like so many Americans, Jews have a full belly and do not realize that Pharoah is about ready to make us slaves.

Himmelfarb's quip indicated that American Jews abjure their economic interests in favor of their liberal values. Certainly it is true that for American Jews to vote for Obama next month they must act against their economic interests.
