To get an idea of how far Detroit has declined, google map 12101 Whithorn, Detroit. Do a street view and look at the results. The white house that you see used to be my grandparents. When I was growing up in the 70's, there was not a vacant house in sight, nor a boarded up one. Scroll around. All those empty lots you see used to have houses. Very sad.

The decline of housing is directly due to predatory lending followed by the housing collapse, foreclosure, eviction, "urban mining" and subsequent burning of the empty homes. This is happening all over but areas of Detroit were targeted by high pressure deceptive predatory financing. The banks were bailed out for the properties already and do nothing to keep the properties up. No homeowners, no tax base. You can blame Democrats all you want, the Banksters are laughing at you all the way to their offshore accounts with golden parachutes made out of your tax dollars in the form of post bail out bonuses. Blaming the people left behind when the bubble popped is a cheap cop out.

JoAnn Watson, Detroit city council member, said, "Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president, and there ought to be a quid pro quo." In other words, President Obama should send the nearly bankrupted city of Detroit millions in taxpayer bailout money. But there's a painful lesson to be learned from decades of political hustling and counsel by intellectuals and urban experts.

In 1960, Detroit's population was 1.6 million. Blacks were 29 percent, and whites were 70 percent. Today, Detroit's population has fallen precipitously to 707,000, of which blacks are 84 percent and whites 8 percent....
