What about the coup led against Chavez 5 years ago? He was broken back out of prison by the military that was supposedly being led against him, and was paraded through Caracas through 300,000 people chanting his name. Hard to fake that. They had him in prison, and the fact that the people didn't want him there speaks bounds about what he had done for that country. However much you detest his style of government, he has done something that other rulers of Venezuela were unable or unwilling to do, and that's kick out American interests and harness the value of the resources for the betterment of the people. And there is a rising wave of nationalism across South America, which Chavez is a part, that will be a powerful force for years.

The state governor who lost Sunday's presidential vote, Henrique Capriles, had accused the flamboyant incumbent of unfairly leveraging to his advantage Venezuela's oil wealth to finance his campaign as well as flaunting his near total control of state institutions.
