I like Steve Chapman's writing and don't agree with the notion that he is some kind of left-wing infiltrator into the TH site, but this is not one of my favorite Chapman columns. However, I think he has at least a partially valid point that we who want to defend the right of gun ownership will be more successful if we rely less on "Second Amendment" as a trump card against all regulation and more on making the factual case that most proposed gun controls are ineffective and counterproductive, whether the Second Amendment permits them or not.

Fuzzy thinking. Many laws are pass and prove to be ineffective and often counterproductive. This does not vindicate them nor does it address their constitutionality.

Chapman did not make the point about making the factual case that most proposed gun controls are ineffective and counterproductive. You did and you are correct. I also make that point often. I think most pro-gun advocates do. Chapman creates a straw-man argument that pro-gun advocates are simple minded and make a one-tiered argument.

If you look at the totality of his writing at TH, he is at best an establishment Republican - at best. I think he is a lefty, but maybe that is just me.

"Establishment Republicans" are nothing more than Lefties posing as something they are not.

Just look at John McCain.

The 2nd Amendment IS the trump card on this issue, backed up by actual FACTS on criminal vs. defensive use of firearms and actual STATISTICS on the utter failure of gun control.

The debate on gun control lately has been going like this: Liberals propose various restrictions on allowable firearms, acceptable owners and approved ammunition. Conservatives exclaim, "Second Amendment!" And the debate, at least in the mind of the latter group, is over.

The Second Amendment, they believe, is not just one important provision of our basic government document. It's the first and last word on the subject of firearms.

Viewing the proposals offered since the Sandy Hook massacre, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., concludes the supporters intend "to completely GUT our Second Amendment rights." The Utah Sheriffs' Association warned President Barack...
