The ‘Gay Marriage’ Spin

What would your prefer. Government to define marriage for you? You define marriage for yourself according to your belief system? -- Does marriage count if not approved by the govt? -- The govt gives a civil contract to heterosexual couples who ask the govt for permission to be married before the ceremony. Should that same civil contract be available to any 2 consenting adults who want to share domestic responsibilities, whether or not they are married or have sex with each other?

Wmou, you're saying the same thing as Flaming. More and more people see no reason for government to approve same-sex marriage.
JustMCMC Wrote: May 25, 2012 3:59 PM
More to the point, government should have no role other than to have it registered as with any other contract. Call it ANYTHING, who cares? Government has no real role in approving or validating any heterosexual marriage either. Just the contract portion that matters for various pieces of law.

There seems to be a consensus here. JustMCMC, Flaming and wmou would just
as soon keep government out of same-sex marriage. How best to implement this?
Kevlar Wrote: May 25, 2012 4:30 PM
Flaming, JustMCMC and wmou, why do some folks want the government involved with same-sex marriage and you folks don't want the government involved in any 'marriage'?

How about simply using the Christian definition of marriage that has been part of our society since the founding: One-man-one-woman-for-one-lifetime?

Why do gays insist on redefining marriage?
How does my traditional marriage threaten a gay couple?

Surely gays will acknowledge that the husband-wife relationship is a superior relationship to that of a couple co-habiting, or a same-sex couple. If they can't acknowledge it's superior, surely they will admit it is different and that the husband-wife relationship should continue to have a unique distinction that the term "marriage" has always assigned it.

I am not gay but I certainly do not accept the idea that a husband and wife couple is in a superior relationship just by virtue of thier gender. I know married couples whose relationships are an embarasment to anyone who knows them and I know gay couples who are really great neighbors and interesting couples. My marraige is unique because I am unique and my wife is unique, not becuase I have an outy and she has an inny.

John, I think you have it right.

John, I would agree to a point, but I also know gay couples who've adopted children and the children are miserable. My cousin's daughter keeps running away. She's 12. She's told her moms that they embarrass her and she doesn't want to have anyone over so she has no friends. They just say that she shouldn't feel that way and they have no solution. That doesn't change how she feels.

And I know of many kids whose lives are miserable even though they have straight parents. Miserable as in horrific, involving drug abuse, secxual abuse, murder alcoholism, etc. I am not inclined to make momentous decisions based on the emotional interplay between a 12 year old girl and her parents.

John5840, do you know any gay couples who do not have a "perfect relationship"?

The American people are not stupid.

Recently President Obama announced he’d discovered a new conviction in favor of homosexual ‘marriage” (conveniently timed to maximize his standing at a $15 million Hollywood fundraiser among the liberal glitterati). It was nothing more than a blatant attempt to fire up his base, particularly young liberal and independent voters: if they don’t vote, Obama loses big-time.

But the American people are not buying into his pandering. A CBS/ New York Times poll found that
