Banks paid 6% interest on savings and your money depreciated 4% just sitting there. I had friends who were thrilled to get a mortgage under 15%. Just bringing inflation down to 4% gave everybody in the US a 6% raise in income. It was not until NAFTA, GATT and Expanded Trade with China passed that the middle class took a big hit.
